Program
This course is intended to supply the background knowledge and the analytic skills necessary for an informed reading of the literature of the English Renaissance, and particularly that of the Elizabethan Age. Lessons will be dedicated to the historical, cultural and intellectual background of the period, and to some of the philosophical and religious issues that are relevant to the work of Shakespeare and his contemporaries. Selected works will be analyzed intensively in class, particular attention being paid to such issues as those of language, personal identity, conceptions of value, and knowledge.
